The Factry Historian license governs access to the software’s features and functionality. Key aspects of the licensing model include:

- **Organization Scope**: A valid license is required for each [organization](docId\:iE9BM-ZMn69TUMtdfngBk) in Factry Historian, except the root organization, which must not have one.
- **Feature Access**:
  - [Calculations](docId\:OpIoDkGNNgYjeDX6zkg_D)
  - [Event Module](docId:0Ith2zLcAIs5YYwhSdTjE)
  - [Authentication providers](docId\:LQwA-mt-lpBHExX0ZW3k8)
  - Collector Failover
  - [Manual Data Entry](docId\:E6ZVm8L_ZLpfpCHDTQU0H)
  - [Asset Prototyping](docId\:B7RjC9mYVP_lIc5wBr_yW)
  - Dimension Events

## License Expiration

When your license is approaching expiration, a notification will appear within the application. You can also check the expiration date of the licenses from the overview.

**When your license expires:**

- Existing functionality remains operational.
  - Measurements continue to be ingested.
  - Calculations continue to run.
  - The GET API endpoints remain accessible, so Grafana dashboards continue to work as expected. Two exceptions sit behind the license check and return 402: `GET /measurements/common-fields` and `GET /dependencies/:resourceUUID`.
- No new collectors, calculations, events, or other changes can be made.
- All data and configurations remain viewable, but modifications are restricted.

## Trial Mode

If you do not currently have a license, you can explore Factry Historian’s capabilities using the **trial mode**:

- **Trial Duration**: Provides access to all features for 2 hours.
- **Behavior After Expiration**:
  - Factry Historian will automatically shut down. This makes the following unavailable: the Historian webpage, the Historian API, any linked Factry datasource in Grafana.
  - Upon restart, you must select the trial mode again to reactivate the application, after which all previously disabled features become available again.

This trial mode offers a fully-featured preview of the software, allowing you to evaluate its functionality before committing to a license.
